About the practice

The practice is located in purpose-built premises in the heart of Portishead, with easy access to retail parks, the High Street, the Marina and Portishead Lake Grounds.

Portishead Medical Practice offers 50% same day appointments and 50% pre-bookable, both face-to-face and telephone appointments.

Each day, a duty Doctor runs an urgent surgery while another carries out all visits requested that day. Two Advanced Nurse Practitioners also mainly see same day appointments.

The team holds practice meetings, clinical meetings and supervision meetings within the week. In addition, the Partners host a Christmas party in January plus social events during the year.

Portishead Medical Practice is part of the Woodspring Locality and Gordano Valley Cluster.

Working environment, values and culture

Portishead Medial Group has an individual and unique vision – PMG CARES:

Put the population at the heart of all they do

Manage resources wisely

Go the extra mile to promote health and well-being

Create an honest and open culture

Actively listen to their population, involve them in decisions about their care

Research and teach, supporting new treatments and clinicians

Ensure excellent standards in primary healthcare

Show that they care

Believing strongly in a one team approach, all roles are valued as they all contribute to the service and care that the practice provides.

What we offer

The practice genuinely values each and every member of the team, is committed to enabling two-way communication and values contributions and suggestions from everyone to provide the best possible service.

Staff appreciate the great atmosphere and team spirit within the practice, commenting on the good organisation and how staff are listened to and involved in the design of changes and improvements.

Staff can take advantage of job share and part-time working where appropriate while the practice supports portfolio careers.

Paid maternity, paternity and adoption leave, shared parental leave are all also available, as is a childcare voucher scheme.

Learning and development

All members of the practice provide support and coaching for colleagues and communal coffee and lunch breaks provide an opportunity to relax and chat through any challenges.

All new members of staff receive a training plan and an induction programme. The induction programme includes statutory (health and safety, etc.) information, a walk round the building and introduction to all staff. New team members spend time with other departments and GPs /colleagues as appropriate to see how the practice is organised and the procedures that are followed. If appropriate, they will sit in with other GPs and receive 1-1 mentor sessions. All staff receive an annual practice review.

A buddy is allocated to support and mentor the new member of staff and to ensure that they have someone to turn to if they have any concerns, although all members of the team are willing to help and answer questions at any time.

Clinicians receive one week of study leave each year and administrative staff are also given time to attend training. In addition GPs are given time for their appraisal (including preparation).

Opportunities for mutual support and peer learning include monthly clinical meetings in which clinical cases are discussed, significant events reviewed and colleagues can give advice or feedback.

Each GP and ANP is allocated a mentor that they can go to for advice and meet with regularly. In addition a GP is allocated every day to provide clinical advice to ANPs, Registrars and new GPs to support them with the patients that they see in their clinics.

Our patients

Patients reflect the demographic of the area, which is predominantly white and middle class. The practice also cares for many elderly people and young families.

Portishead patients’ feedback includes that they appreciate the excellent care that they receive from clinicians and the friendly, helpful, caring attitude of reception staff.
