Careers in General Practice in Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire
Shirehampton Health Centre, Pembroke Road, Shirehampton, Bristol, BS11 9SB
Shirehampton Group Practice serves an area in north-west Bristol, bounded by the River Avon and the M5 comprising Shirehampton, Avonmouth, Lawrence Weston, Sea Mills and parts of Coombe Dingle, Stoke Bishop and Henbury.
Dr Ellis opened a surgery in 1936. He was followed by other doctors, including Dr Archer Sr, Dr Andrews, Dr Bush, Dr Taylor and Dr Mortensen. The practice moved from Tregenna House on the High Street when the first Health Centre opened in 1984. Today’s spacious, purpose-built health centre opened in December 2007. We also have a small, branch surgery in Lawrence Weston.
The Group Practice has a close association with the University of Bristol and teaches medical students in all five years of their undergraduate training. Sometimes we invite patients’ help in dedicated teaching sessions at home or at the health centre. More often, you may be informed that a student is sitting in with the doctor you are going to see. If, for any reason, you would prefer to see the doctor alone, please let the receptionist or the doctor know.
We became a Training Practice in 2010. Dr Crane is a qualified GP trainer. We host GP Registrars in the Practice. They are fully qualified Doctors in the final stages of their training to become GPs. We also host F2 doctors. They are in their second year following full qualification and will spend four months in the Practice.
The Group Practice is part of the NIHR Clinical Research Network: Primary Care West England. Most of our research projects are overseen by the University of Bristol. Medical research is vital to evaluate the effectiveness of existing and future treatments. We only take part in research with full ethical approval. If you were to fit the inclusion criteria for a particular research project, you would be given detailed information about it and would only be included if you gave written, informed consent.
