Practice Nurse - Old School Surgery

Can you work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver high quality practice nurse services to patients in line with excellent clinical practice and maximising nursing clinical skills? We are looking for a Nurse with previous experience working as a practice/treatment room Nurse to join our friendly and skilled team.

You will be joining a nursing team of 23! A fantastic team of Nurses, comprising of Mental Health Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Care of the Elderly Nurses, Treatment and Practice room nurses, HCA's, Clinical Pharmacists, Care coordinators, Paramedics and Physio's. Amazing well-trained team of enthusiastic, happy Receptionists & Admin staff.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Chronic Disease Management/Long Term Conditions within the clinic setting
  • Health Promotion
  • To collaborate with and enable clients and other members of the primary health care.
  • Cervical cytology & teaching breast awareness
  • Wound Care / Dressings
  • Taking bloods
  • LES/DES/QOF related clinical and administrative work
  • Routine immunisations / Childhood immunisations
  • Travel health advice and vaccinations
  • Menopause and HRT consultations
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Flu, Pneumococcal, Shingles, COVID and Pertussis in Pregnancy vaccinations
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings
  • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
  • An interest in respiratory, particularly asthma, is desirable there will be opportunities to develop in this speciality.
  • Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post

 

Job Description

  • To undertake all duties in line with the training and instruction provided by the Management Team and General Practitioners
  • Assistance at clinics, setting up and supporting other clinicians and ensuring patient care by chaperoning and assisting patients to dress and undress.
  • Conduct pre-clinic checks.
  • Conduct weight and height measurements, test and record blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • The testing and result recording of clinical specimens
  • Preparation of clinical specimens for collection
  • Provide assistance in minor operations and coil fittings ensuring patient care by chaperoning.
  • Venepuncture and the taking and preparing of pathology samples.
  • Undertake ECGs and Audiograms
  • New patient health checks for newly registered patients
  • NHS Health Checks
  • Giving injections to the practice population according to protocols Ensure adequate infection control procedures in treatment and consulting rooms.
  • Ensure adequate stock levels in stock room, treatment rooms, fridges and cupboards.
  • Ordering medical supplies and checking/recording and storage of supplies on receipt
  • Inputting of information onto EMIS
  • Ensure the safe storage, recording, rotation and disposal of vaccines.
  • Fridge temperature logging and reporting cold chain issues as necessary.
  • Prioritise problems presenting in the treatment room, assess and plan appropriate course of action for the emergency patient situation.
  • Ability / confidence to work alone in the treatment room, seeking advice from colleagues / GPs when necessary.
  • Some pharmacological knowledge required, especially relating to wound care / infection.
  • Knowledge of treatment room Patient Group Directives and associated policies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of patients with long-term conditions and acute illness presenting in the treatment room.
  • Assist with an emergency patient situation, keeping updated with resuscitation skills.
  • Cervical cytology - attend relevant recognised course for cervical cytology and possess PIN for LBC.
  • Undertake vaginal swabs and discuss this with patients, offer sexual health advice and give relevant contact numbers / information as required.
  • Wound care - be confident in wound assessment, be able to identify signs of infection and use suitable dressings after initial assessment. Have a broad knowledge of wound types and methods of management, i.e., burns, lacerations, sebaceous cysts/drainage and insertion of wick dressings, postoperative wound care, and suture and clip removal, minor skin injuries; i.e. grazes and bruises. Refer patients to medical colleagues for a review when necessary.
  • Leg ulcer dressings and management - knowledge of ulcer dressings, ability to assist with these dressings in the absence of a specialist nurse.
  • Minor Surgery / Coil / Implanon contraceptive implant fitting - prepare necessary equipment, support the patient and assist the GP during the procedure. Ensure asepsis during procedure.
  • Supporting new members of staff / nursing and medical students. Taking skin scrapings & nail clippings and complete relevant paperwork for fungal skin/nail investigations.
  • Pregnancy testing.
  • Helicobacter testing as per test kit/instructions as issued.
  • Administration of medicines via the injectable route, whether routine or emergency based.
  • Administer and support patients undertaking oxygen therapy or nebuliser treatments.
  • Assess the patient presenting with a minor injury and implement the most appropriate course of action, refer to a GP / refer to A&E if necessary.
  • Ensure correct data entry in patients notes for any minor injury within the past 48hrs, adhering to the minor injury guidelines.
  • Chronic disease management if qualified and approved by Practice then responsible for running clinics autonomously with the ability to instigate basic diagnostic tests, developing and maintaining the practice register and working actively with the lead GP in achievement of targets etc. Caseload management, aiming to identify those people with a significant risk but who have not developed symptoms and offer advice and treatment. Source and supply up to date education material. Educate and encourage patients in self-management of their condition.
  • Any other duties as directed by the Managers or GPs.
