Lead best practice

All practices have either a practice manager or a business partner to support the GP partners in enabling and ensuring delivery of the best possible care for their local population.

It’s a leadership role that takes responsibility for making sure the practice runs smoothly, efficiently and profitably. It’s also key to ensuring the team are happy, committed and dedicated to delivering a high quality patient experience.

It’s a broad, busy and varied role that includes:

  • Strategic management and planning
  • Financial management - cash flow, budget, billing and maximising income
  • HR management - Recruiting and managing staff, dealing with any HR issues, policies and procedures, contracts and payroll, and managing staff performance
  • Providing leadership and direction to the practice team
  • Building and facilities management, including compliance with CQC and health and safety regulations
  • Quality management and continuous improvement
  • Management of patient complaints
  • Ensuring high quality, friendly and approachable patient services, appointment booking, managing complaints and patient involvement
  • Ensuring effective internal and external communications, across a range of media
  • Maintaining oversight of NHS and CQC developments and legislative changes, advising partners on their impact on the practice
  • Overall management of CQC compliance and records for inspections
  • Working with other practice managers to develop collaborative working and identifying opportunities for sharing resources
  • Attending practice manager meetings and networking with other practice managers and commissioners
  • Representing the practice in discussions and negotiations with commissioners and the development of new services in the local area
  • Fulfilling internal and external reporting requirements
  • Information governance
